1971 was the year of the legendary Concert for Bangladesh in New York’s Madison Square Garden, before an audience of 40,000. George Harrison and Ravi Shankar wanted to raise donations in aid of Bangladeshi refugees, whose numbers had grown to ten million people in the wake of the Bangladesh War. In connection with the planned concert, Harrison recorded the single “Bangla Desh”, and arranged for Apple Records to issue Ravi Shankar’s EP “Joi Bangla”.
To mark the 50th State Anniversary of Bangladesh, Daniel Seidl, a former Executive Director of the Bangladesh German Chamber of Commerce who was awarded the distinction “Brand Ambassador of Bangladesh”, planned to organize a “50 Years Anniversary Concert for Bangladesh” to be held in New York, London and Berlin. But the event had to be canceled due to the current worldwide situation.
Nevertheless, unwilling to abandon the idea of commemorating this special anniversary with a musical tribute, Seidl commissioned hit record producer Robert Bartha to compose and produce a hymn in honor of the occasion. Bartha, whose productions have repeatedly conquered the international charts, and who has written songs for world stars and Hollywood movies, brought together ten renowned artists from all over the world to form the unique supergroup “Artists4Desh”. With them he recorded his new song “Through The Tiger’s Eye” – partly on site in his Mallorca studio, otherwise under direction via Skype from the artists’ studios in Sweden, Bangladesh, Malta, Poland and elsewhere.
In advance of the anniversary itself, “Through The Tiger’s Eye” proved a convincing success at an unofficial presentation in the Prime Minister’s office, and also on national radio stations, where it was positioned and celebrated as an “official hymn”. This danceable, heart-warming track is not just a modern pop song and an earworm – more than that, it’s a skilful blend of up-to-date chart repertoire with traditional Bengali sounds. The lyrics radiate optimism and a zest for life, qualities more important than ever in current times. If we view the world with the serenity and courage of the tiger, everything will come right!
Artists4Desh are Ozzy Lino (Malta), Saraals (Spain), Inan Lima (Brazil), Alicja Chrząszcz (Poland), Konal (Bangladesh), Linda Linné (Sweden), Birjiwan & Bir Kirtan of Sunni.ai (France/Balearic Islands), Liane Evers (Ireland), Ninad (Bangladesh), and Robert Bartha himself (Germany).
